Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts is where boys and girls between 14 and 18 years of age can continue their scouting journey. In this section, the Explorers plan their own programme of activities and camps. This often involves taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Our Explorer unit meets every Monday evening.  Activities are carried out jointly with Explorers at the nearby 1st Oxshott scout group.  Many of our explorers also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, also working jointly with other Esher District scout groups as the Dragon scouting group.

At this level, scouting becomes truly adventurous.  A typical term’s programme of activities might include orienteering, day camps, a cooking competition, rifle shooting and the planning and execution of expedition hikes.  Camping activities range from weekend and multi-night activity camps in a single location to backpacking expeditions.  Explorers get the opportunity to participate in sailing weekends and in visits to venues such as climbing centres and escape rooms.

Some of our Explorer scouts choose to join the Scout Association’s Young Leaders scheme, a mission-based training programme that equips them to help our adult leaders in the running of the younger sections, such as our Cubs pack, and prepares them for a possible future role as adult scout group leaders.

The explorers are assisted by Kirstie Wood, our Explorer Scout Leader, and by Anya Davidson, a leader at 1st Oxshott.  Paul Collyer, our former Explorer Scout Leader, also provides assistance when needed.

Please email our membership secretary f you wish to find out more about joining the Explorer unit.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
