Sports Day and Picnic

Date: 29th Jul 2023 Author: Nigel Harris

On a Monday in July we brought all our sections together for their final meeting of the scouting year.  We held a scouty sports day on the common near the White Church, and invited parents to come along, bring younger or non-scouting siblings, and enjoy drinks and a picnic.  One of our trustees, Felix, brought drinks for all – soft drinks for the young people and some beers and wines for adults who felt so inclined – with crisps and fresh strawberries.  The parents and families sat and chatted while the young people battled it out in sack races, tugs-of-war and scouty competitions such as ‘sausage’.

Also at the event were three wonderful parents who are keen to join the uniformed leader team when we start up again in September.  One already has children in the group, and has been helping out, so is familiar with what we do.  The other two each have a child or children who will join the group in September.  They apparently weren’t put off by meeting us, or seeing the general chaos out on the sports field, so we’re looking forward to welcoming them to the group in September.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
