Making the most of winter

Date: 17th Jan 2022 Author: Nigel Harris

Undaunted by the dark evening and freezing temperatures, the scout section held their second meeting of the new year outdoors.   After gathering kindling and wood, and practicing their fire lighting skills, the scouts toasted marshmallows over glowing embers.

In a couple of weeks’ time, the scouts will be outside again for a night hike on the commons.  The cubs will also be taking advantage of dark clear winter nights to do some astronomy and their own night hike.

Other planned activities for the beavers, cubs and scouts range from traditional scouting skills such as knots, camping and camp cooking (pancakes, anyone?) to scientific experiments, electronics, photography and board games.

Also this term, our young people will joining with other scout groups from the Esher district, to take part in activities including a day hike in the Surrey Hills and a cross country run around Oxshott Heath.  There will also be trips to indoor climbing centres for the cubs and scouts, rifle shooting for the scouts, and a whole weekend of winter activities for the Explorer section.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
