Help Wanted!

Date: 9th Jun 2022 Author: Nigel Harris

Like all scout groups, 1st Weston Green is run entirely by unpaid adult volunteers (with help from our young members, especially in the more senior sections).  We are currently desperately short of people in several areas.

We urgently need:

  • Uniformed leaders and assistants – come and join in the fun at our regular weekly meetings, become part of the team, and help young people learn new life skills while having scouting adventures.  We’ll provide all the support, mentoring, and formal training you need.
  • A new Group Scout Leader (GSL) – we won’t pretend this isn’t a demanding role: the GSL is the overall manager of our adult volunteer team of leaders.  But as with all roles, we work as a team and provide lots of support and training.  GSLs are often seasoned uniformed leaders, but they don’t have to be.  We just need someone with experience of managing a team, someone with good people skills who can motivate and get people working well together, someone with good organisation and communication skills.
  • Charity trustees – our trustees form our executive committee which meets six times a year, look after the group’s finances and equipment and provide support to ensure the leaders have everything they need to keep the group going.  We need a few extra people to come along to these meetings just to help ensure we’re making sensible decisions in the way the group is run.
  • Secretary – we need someone to attend our exec meetings, take notes and write up minutes and action points.  You would also become a charity trustee and exec member, and would receive some short (20-30 minute) online formal training courses.

As well as these urgent requirements, we could use some more informal and occasional help in many areas.  Even the smallest contribution of time and effort would help.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
