Christmas Tree Collection

Date: 14th Jan 2024 Author: Nigel Harris

On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th January, the parents of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, along with some of our leaders, were out driving round the local area in vans, collecting Christmas trees for recycling. Nearly 1,000 people had paid £10 or £15 to have their tree collected by us. In 14 hours, using three vans, we brought 1,000 trees to a field on the Sandown Park estate.  The trees were later shredded and transported away for composting.

This is our only annual fundraising event, and we ask all families to participate if they can. As well as teams of three in the vans (a driver, a navigator, and a tree lugger), we need help at the collection site, and administrative help before and during the collection weekend, to make sure the vans visit all the addresses where tree collections have been booked.

Our 2024 collection will have raised around £9,000 for the group after expenses.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
