posted 12 Feb 2009, 03:52 by Unknown user   [ updated 12 Feb 2009, 04:06 ]
  1. The Surrey Stumble takes place on Sunday 15th March 2009 and is organised by the Walking Association of Surrey Police (WASP). The event will comprise of four routes of varying distances – 6, 12, 20 and 30 miles, all commencing from the sports field at Surrey Police Headquarters, Mount Browne, Sandy Lane, Guildford GU3 1HG (Grid Ref: OS Explorer 145; 988478) and finishing at the Samson Centre, Riverside, Guildford GU1 4LW where transport will be available to return participants to the start.
  2. The event will go ahead whatever the weather unless, in the opinion of the organisers, it is dangerous to do so.
  3. The aim of the event is to provide a range of challenging but enjoyable walks for all abilities and to raise funds for the Samson Centre at Guildford – a local self help group that provides practical and emotional support to those affected by Multiple Sclerosis. All proceeds from the event will be donated to this charity and entrants are encouraged to seek their own sponsorship. (See the Samson Centre Website for details on creating a Justgiving page for on-line sponsorship http://www.samsoncentre.org.uk/events.html.     If required, printed sponsorship forms are available from the organisers.)
  4. The event is open to individual entrants and teams of 3 or more.
  5. Participants under 16 yrs must be accompanied by a person aged 18 yrs or over.
  6. Entry fee for any distance is £5.00 / €7.00 with children under 5 being entered free.
  7.  All entrants must finish by 1800. Route instructions and a map will be issued at the start (not before). You will be issued with a start card which must be produced at each check-point and handed in at the finish. This will enable the organisers to keep track of everybody for safety purposes. Whilst not essential, participants may benefit from using a compass. All of the routes are on OS Explorer Map 145.
  8. If, in the view of a marshal, you are unlikely to finish within the cut-off time, you will be asked to retire. Similarly, if you wish to retire before reaching the finish, please ensure that a marshal or the Walk Control is aware.
  9. Runners and joggers are welcome to participate but please note that this is not a race, you will not be timed and you will start at 0700 irrespective of what distance you wish to complete. This will prevent walkers from obstructing your progress.
  10. Entries will be accepted on the day of the event and all finishers will receive a certificate and commemorative badge but, to ensure receipt of badge/team award on completion of the walk, it will be helpful if individuals and teams lodge their entries with the organisers by 28th February 2009. Late entrants may experience a delay.
  11. This event has been risk assessed and the organisers are satisfied that it does not attract Adventure Activities Regulations licensing.
  12. Whilst every effort has been made to make the Stumble as safe and enjoyable as possible, entry is at your own risk. Suitable footwear and clothing should be worn.
  13. Accommodation is not provided but there are various suitable facilities within the local area (details from Guildford Tourist Information Centre – 01483 444333).
  14. Start times will be as on table on the right.
  15. Light refreshment will be available at each check-point.
  16. First aid will be available upon request from Walk Control and a First Aid Post will be in  place at the Elstead check-point.
  17. Regrettably, as all of the routes use public footpaths/bridleways and are predominantly rural, they are not suitable for cycles, wheelchairs or pushchairs.
  18. If required, further information can be obtained from Geoff Phillips (01483 631418) or Dave Miller (01483 630794) - Criminal Justice Department, Surrey Police HQ
